Want a birthday video for an Instagram story? Make a tall one where the birthday person's actual face, cut out of a photo, sings and dances to an original birthday song, then post the MP4 to your story. On Tangy Limes that takes a photo, their name, and about two minutes of your attention span.
The trick with Stories is the shape. A wide video posted to a story ends up as a little rectangle floating in a sea of blurry nothing. A vertical birthday video fills the whole screen, which is what you want when the goal is making your friend look ridiculous at full size.

Two cards built tall for Stories
Make a Wish. Their face goes on a dancer in a sparkly dress next to a birthday cake taller than they are. Then it's a rainbow balloon arch and some disco finger pointing, a karaoke stage with a gold sequin jumpsuit and a microphone, and a backyard at night with confetti cannons going off. It ends on a three-tier cake with candles and sprinkles while balloons rise up the screen.
Totally Rad Birthday. The 80s one. Aerobics studio with leg warmers and wrist sweatbands, an arcade where they do the robot, a roller rink, and a mall at night in a pastel suit. Good for anyone who still says "rad" without irony, or anyone you'd like to accuse of it.
Both are 9:16 and both take one face or two. Put the birthday person in alone, or add yourself as the second dancer so it looks like you two choreographed this together in a garage.

How to make it, start to story
- Open the card and upload a photo of them. Facing the camera works best. The cutout is their real face with nothing redrawn by AI, so the photo you pick is the face the internet gets.
- Type their name. It shows up in the intro.
- Press play and watch the free preview. Their mouth opens and closes to the words, so it looks like they're singing happy birthday to themselves. They are, technically.
- Fix anything that looks off. You can paint the cutout to add hair back or erase a stray shoulder, and change head size, tilt and position.
- Download the MP4 in 9:16 and post it to your story from your camera roll. Tag them so they can't pretend they missed it.
The video runs about 40 seconds, which is long enough for people to screenshot the worst moment and short enough that they watch to the end.

Story, feed, or the group chat
Downloads also come in 4:5 and square if you'd rather put it in the feed or a carousel, where it sits there permanently as evidence. If the birthday person isn't on Instagram, or just ignores it out of principle, make a share link instead. It opens a plain web page that plays the video, so you can drop it in a text or group chat and nobody has to download anything or sign in.
Cost: the preview with their face is free. Keeping it is $1.99, one time. No subscription, no account, nothing that renews quietly next March. Until November 30 the code BFCM2026 knocks it down to $1.49.

A few headline ideas
The card headline says HAPPY BIRTHDAY, but you can type over it. Some options for a story:
- SWIPE UP FOR CAKE (there is no cake)
- 30 AND STILL DOING THE ROBOT
- AGED LIKE A CASSETTE TAPE
- MAKE A WISH, MAKE IT QUICK
Then post it early in the day. Birthday stories are a race, and the one with their face doing disco fingers next to a giant cake tends to beat a photo of a latte with "hbd" on it.
