To make a greeting card funny, make it about one person and nobody else. Pick one true thing about them, say it in as few words as you can, and aim it at them just hard enough that they'll show it to people. Here are the five rules we work by, each with a line you can steal, plus the Tangy Limes video cards that do the heavy lifting.
1. Be specific enough that it couldn't go to anyone else
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DAD could go to any dad. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE MAN WHO REVERSES INTO THE GARAGE can go to one. The detail is where the laugh lives: the way they load the dishwasher, the car they refuse to sell, the group trip they planned that went sideways in a way nobody has forgotten.
Line to steal: PLEASE SELL THE BOAT.
2. Short beats clever
A card headline only has room for a few words, and that works in your favor. If the joke needs a setup, it's a story for dinner, not a card. A handful of words, all caps, no explanation.
Line to steal: YOUR BACK HURTS NOW.
3. Aim at them, not at a group
Jokes about men, moms or millennials land on nobody in particular. A joke about your brother's fantasy football team lands squarely on your brother, which is the point.
Line to steal: LAST PLACE AGAIN, CHAMP.
4. Mean is fine, cruel isn't
A good roast is a compliment in disguise: it says you know them well enough to aim. Our test is the birthday dinner. Picture the card being passed around the table. If they'd laugh and grab the phone to show the next person, send it. If the table would go quiet, soften the line.
Line to steal: SORRY, NOT SORRY.
5. Put their face in it
This is the one a paper card can't do. On Tangy Limes, you upload a photo, their face goes on a dancer in a short music video, and their mouth opens and closes to an original song. Whatever expression was in the photo is now singing. It handles rules one and three at once, since nothing is more specific than their actual face.
Cards that follow the rules
For the one who's touchy about turning 40: You're Old Now. A bingo hall, a porch rocking chair, a golf cart, and a headline that just says YOU'RE OLD.
For the dad who still plays air guitar: Shred Your Birthday, an arena stage with pyro and a giant inflatable birthday cake.
For the apology you don't mean: Sorry, Not Sorry, a non-apology with a boy-band dance break.
For the coworker retiring somewhere sunny: No More Mondays, from a cruise ship deck to a shuffleboard court to a golf course at sunset.
For the family group chat in December: Holly Jolly Family, four faces in a snowy front yard with far too many blinking lights.
Making it
Use a photo where they're facing the camera with their mouth visible. Not the flattering one. Type your line into the headline, then watch the whole card with their face in it, free. If it made you laugh, it's $1.99 to keep, with no subscription. Send the share link to the group chat and wait for the reply that's just your name in capital letters.
